Five-axis milling technique has been around for a long time

Generally, a five-axis mill is used instead of complex fixturing of the workpiece. For 3-dimensional milling of surfaces, the 5- axis mill cutter is usually positioned at a specific compound angle to the workpiece which will yield the most efficient material removal for the cutter type. A 3-axis cutter path is then executed. Some of the benefits of using 5-axis mill machines are as given below: If a serious consideration is given to the specific application and the various alternate means of achieving five-axis capabilities, there are umpteen numbers of benefits that five-axis machining can offer to the moldmaker. For example, if you are using a flat bottom end mill and maintaining perpendicularity to the complex surface, the time of machining can be greatly reduced. This can be accomplished by stepping over the full diameter of the cutter, which eventually reduces the required number of passes across a surface. The same principle and technology applies to side milling of angled surfaces. This similar process will also be used to eliminate ribbing caused by ball-nose end mills, resulting in a much better surface finish, and reduction on manual millwork and handwork required to clean up kellered surfaces. This technology i.e. 5-axis milling technology eliminates multiple setups required to re-position the workpiece at complex angles; thereby it not only saves time, but greatly reduces errors and costly tooling and fixture expenses required to place and the workpiece in place. 5-axis millingtechnology also provides the ability to machine complex parts that are not otherwise possible.
